Double diamond’ing a job decision
What should I be doing next?
If you come from a product or product adjacent role, you might be familiar with the “double diamond” (I’ve also included a diagram below).
Figuring out what I should be doing next in a job search is no different than figuring out what to build. It’s daunting and a bit of a wandering path. To take some stress off of whether you are spending your time in the most effective way, think about it as a double diamond exercise.
It can look like:
- A bit of reflection on what you do and don’t like about your current job and how you want to spend your time.
- Maybe start to build a shortlist of companies whose team, mission and product look interesting to you.
- Go chat with people. Ask friends for intros. Try and learn from their experience. You’re not trying to make an ask in the conversation. You’re chatting to listen and hopefully get inspiration.
- It’s likely 4 out of 5 conversations will be pleasant but lead to nothing. But there is probably that 1 out of 10 conversation that may spark a new path or idea to consider.
- Start to go deeper in exploring opportunities and conversations on what you think you’re most excited about.
- This might mean finding specific roles to get referred to.
- Hopefully, you hit on something. More likely though you'll need to enter the 2nd diamond. Zoom back out and repeat this process with a narrower focus.
At the end of all this the goal is you'll find something you love spending time on.
